Purchasing natural stone is an investment that will provide you with many years of enjoyment. Below are a few guidelines on proper care for your natural stone to help extend its life and beauty.

Care and Precautions

Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices.  Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of many stones. Trivets or placemats are recommended under ceramics or other items that may scratch the surface. Fats or oils may penetrate the stone and leave a stain – be sure to clean up such substances immediately.

Cleaning

Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, clear glass cleaner, stone soap or a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a soft cloth for best results. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids.  Rinse the surface thoroughly if using a soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the stone.

Sealing

Natural stones, while hard, are also porous and in food preparation and vanity areas, will need to have a penetrating sealer applied. Sealing your stone with a quality impregnating sealer will help prevent most spills from damaging your investment. Look for a natural stone sealer and apply approximately once a year or as needed.

Spills

The important thing when dealing with spills on a natural stone surface is to clean it up as soon as possible. Blot the spill with a paper towel immediately. Don't wipe the area, it will spread the spill. Flush the area with plain water and mild soap and rinse several times. Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat if necessary.
